Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease of the small intestine characterized by gluten intolerance. Symptoms include abdominal pain, chronic or recurrent diarrhea, weight loss, growth delay, chronic anemia, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue, depression and infertility. In the oral cavity, celiac disease can manifest itself as enamel defects, amelogenesis imperfectom, recurrent aphthous ulceration, atrophic glossitis and possible oral lichen planus. Manifestations of coeliac disease in the oral cavity are first seen and diagnosed by dentists, consequently contributing to early detection of the disease and in turn can refer patients for further treatment. Although manifestations of celiac disease in the oral cavity are not specific, as symptoms are similar to those of other diseases, it is important to take note of these symptoms as they may indicate the possibility of celiac disease.
