Abstract:

Geroprophylaxis in gerontological public health refers to a set of measures and procedures for prevention of diseases and functional disability in old age. The implementation of the "Primary, Secondary, Tertiary and Quaternary Prevention Program for the Elderly" is exceptionally important for achieving the goals of geroprophylaxis. The program of geroprophylactic measures is mainly aimed at eliminating risk factors that affect the development of diseases and functional disabilities in the elderly, as well as timely detection of focused diseases, preservation of residual functional capacity, prevention of complications and unnecessary medicalization, long-term hospitalization and excessive invasive medical interventions in a geriatric patient. Continuous education in geroprophylaxis in the field of gerontology, geriatrics and geriatric nursing care is essential for professionals in the health care of the elderly as a part of development of their competencies.
