What are the problems in caring for a neurologic patient in a family medicine practice?
Neurological diseases are a growing challenge in the work of family physicians. Due to the aging of the population, as well as various other causes, there is an increase in the number of patients suffering from neurological diseases, consequently having negative socio-economic effects. Chronic neurological diseases affect the quality of life of patients and their families, and a role of family medicine physicians is crucial in their care. Patients with neurological diseases are at an increased risk for developing malnutrition. It is influenced by many factors: nutritional intake disorders, abnormalities in energy consumption, changes in eating habits, gastrointestinal disorders, side-effects of medications. In addition to making a timely diagnosis, referring for further treatment and participating in the treatment of a neurologic patient, the family physician also plays an important role in the process of neurorehabilitation of the patient. Neurorehabilitation of patients should be initiated immediately after the onset of a brain lesion or the establishment of a neurological outflow, taking into account the patient’s capabilities and the etiology of the disease.
