Obesity, cardiovascular risk and available treatments
Author: Bruna Škapin, Mario Ivanuša
Abstract:
Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for more than two thirds of deaths related to obesity. Obesity is a complex chronic metabolic disease characterised by excessive adipose tissue accumulation that increases morbidity and mortality risk. Obesity has a direct effect on the heart health, causing electrocardiographic, hemodynamic, structural and functional changes. According to the guidelines, non-invasive treatments relying on the lifestyle changes are prioritised. The focus is on maintaining energy balance through appropriate diet and physical activity. Also, offering psychological support is crucial for positive health behaviour adherence.
